FAQsFAQs
Jeep is one of the world’s most well-known car brands. You’d have a tough time finding someone who doesn’t understand what a Jeep is or can’t distinguish a Wrangler from a Jeep, whether you’re in New York City, London, a small town in Australia, or the middle of Germany Black Forest. It’s more than just a brand name; it’s become a general term for any off-road vehicle that looks tough. Getting here was more challenging than it sounds. Jeep has moved from automaker to automaker like a cursed idol, leaving a trail of dead companies in its wake.
History of Jeep
The Jeep brand was officially started in 1941. At first, they only made vehicles for the military. Jeeps were the first mass-produced cars with four doors. This was the start of the SUV era. Jeep has a long and rich history. In the 1940s, it changed how cars were made and continued to set the standard for off-road cruisers.
In the 1940s, when it became clear that the U.S. would join the war in Europe, the U.S. Army contacted many car companies and asked them to build a prototype. Karl Probst, a designer in Detroit for the American Bantam Car Company, heard the call. Willys and Ford eventually took over making the Bantam Reconnaissance Car, and both companies later made Jeeps for the Army.
Some people aren’t sure where the name “Jeep” came from, but the main theory is that it came from slurring the word “GP” into “Jeep.” GP meant Government Purposes or General Purposes. Joe Frazer, who used to be the head of Willys-Overland, said that the story was true, and that’s how the Jeep got its name.
After the war, Jeep decided to build on its newfound popularity by making a lot of new designs. In the 1950s, Jeep started to look into more ways to use its cars for recreation. It came out with seven new models, including the M-170, CJ-5, and FC-170. The CJ-5 was the Jeep that was made for the longest time, from 1954 to 1984.
Henry J. Kaiser bought Jeep for $60 million in 1953. Kaiser was a big part of the beginning of the 4WD and its future. Under Kaiser, Jeeps were made in 30 different countries and sold in more than 150 other countries around the world.
In the 1960s, the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee we know today were made. In 1963, Jeep came out with the J-Series Wagoneer, bigger than a station wagon and still called an “SUV.”
American Motors Corporation bought Kaiser Jeep in 1970, and the first thing they did was separate military production from civilian recreation production. During this time, Jeep also made three different engine choices available. In 1976, when Jeep was 35 years old, they released the CJ-7, which later became the famous “Wrangler.”
In 1987, right after the Jeep Wrangler came out, Chrysler Corporation bought American Motors Corporation. What AMC had built was changed by the new leaders, who made the Wrangler and Cherokee famous.
The Wrangler was named “4×4 of the Year” by Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road, and the Cherokee was called “Four Wheeler of the Year” by Four Wheeler Magazine in 1997.
Today, both Wrangler and Cherokee use elements and traditions from the past 50 years. Jeep’s famous boxy, off-road design will always stand the test of time, even as the company and its products change yearly. A Jeep is the best way to take on the great outdoors.
About the Jeep Wrangler, what do you need to know?
The first model year for the newest Wrangler, which is the fourth generation. This group of people might be called the “JL.” JL is what Jeep calls the car, and many Jeep fans call it that.
Not every 2018 Wrangler is a fourth-gen model. For the 2018 model year, Jeep sold both the third-generation and the fourth-generation models side by side. Third-generation JKs are older. JLs are slightly larger and have more facilities than JKs. These Wranglers look the same, but you can tell which one is a JL by how its headlights and running lights are mounted in the front fender flares.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL comes with either two doors or four. The four-door Jeep is called Unlimited. Both can have a soft or hard top with several panels that can be taken off. You can also take the Wrangler’s doors off to make driving even more like being outside.
The most well-known Jeeps are
Willys Quad (1940): This was the first Jeep, a prototype. It was called the Quad because it had a 44 system. There were only two prototypes.
Willys MB (1941–1945): The design of the MB has been copied by so many car companies around the world that the word “jeep” has become a common noun. Even now, a lot of Mahindra cars are still called jeeps.
Jeep Wagoneer (1960–1969): The Wagoneer was the most refined car ever made. The number of models in the Jeep brand line-up grew to 14. It was the first Jeep Cherokee to have the now-popular full-time 44 system.
Jeep Cherokee XJ (1980–1989): It was the first compact 4-door SUV, UniFrame construction, and full-time 44 system that could shift on the fly. From 1990 to 2009, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Rubicon were the most capable cars that Jeep ever made.
Jeep Compass (2010–present): New Jeep cars like the Grand Cherokee, Renegade, Compass, and now the Meridian in India came out.
Conclusion
The American Army wanted a vehicle that could replace both the horse and the motorcycle as a general-purpose way to get around. This need led to the creation of the Jeep. One popular idea about where the name Jeep came from is that it comes from the letters GP, which stands for “general purpose.”
