Beginners Guide to Car Body Types And Car Shapes

If we analyze the inventions which have made a massive impact on humanity, we will rate automobiles as of the top 10 advancements and inventions.

Cars have numerous different models and as time goes by there are new additions to the club. There are at least 500 different car models across the globe in different car manufacturing brands. Car models could be different but they are from a particular set of shapes and body types. Most of the cars that exist fit in these car shapes and car body types.

When someone decides to purchase a car, they have to throw unlimited options and make the choice for the perfect fit. When they narrow down their choice to a particular type of car, as per the shape and body type, it gets easier.

The Car shapes and body types are reinvented for a particular purpose and irrelevant or inaccurate for some purposes, for example, driving a race car on an off-road track will not be a good idea. Similarly, if someone drives a sedan for an off-roading trip, they might find themselves stuck in the sand somewhere.

Sedan cars can accommodate almost 4-5 passengers and they have 4 doors. Sedans are one of the longest-existing car designs. Sedan cars come along with a larger trunk that can store a good quantity of luggage. They come with a closed roof. However, some modern cars have a small opening on the rooftop of a sedan car. An easier way to express hatchback cars is that they are compact versions of sedan cars. They’ve less space compared to a sedan car. A Hatchback car has a door on the rear end. This door opens in a flip-up manner and gives access to the cargo section of the vehicle. Whereas in sedan cars, you can open a traditional trunk.

SUV - Car Body Type

The SUV car stands for Sports Utility Vehicle. The SUV cars have seating for passengers up to 7, 8, 9, and 10 so on. The specialty of an SUV is that they are engineered to support the best and worst road conditions. You can experience the thrill of driving an SUV on a highway or you can witness its powerful engine in off-roading adventures. In fact, some of the best off-roading cars are SUVs. 

MUVs are similar to SUVs and they stand for Multi Utility Vehicle.

Sports Car

Sports cars or race cars are specifically designed to give you thrilling, high performance, and accurate handling at high speed. They are the hottest-looking cars, if you keep staring at a sports car for a while, you will be bound to take it for a ride and if you take them out for a ride, you will be bound to fall in love with them. Most sports cars have two doors and two-seaters. But there are sports cars with 4 doors and passenger seats for 4 people.

Coupe - Car Body Type


Coupe cars are sedan cars with two doors and passenger seats for 2 people. These cars have big trunks for carrying cargo and the roof is closed. There are some sports cars that are categorised as coupe because of the design, for example, the Porsche Boxster and Chevrolet Corvette. 


Most of the coupe cars are expensive, High-performance cars and luxurious cars. Coupe cars are most common in Europe.

Station Wagon

Station wagons are when sedans meet SUVs and hatchbacks. They are designed like a sedan in the front and in the rear, they have a hatchback-like door to access the trunk. Their capacity to hold passengers is more than a sedan, like 6 to 8. And, there is ample space to keep luggage.


Although it is worth mentioning that Station Wagons are very few on the roads today.

Convertible - Car type

Inconvertible cars, the roof of the car could be removed and attached as required. Some of the cars need a manual change of roof and others have this automated. Most modern cars have this automation in convertible cars. Like the coupe, most convertible cars have two doors and are two-seaters. But there are enough convertible cars with four-seat passengers. There are convertible cars for every category of car, like a sedan with convertibles, an SUV with convertibles, and hatchbacks with the convertible.

This creates a huge space for carrying essentials in your car, you could even take a minivan for a trip to the mountains and attach your tent with the van and sleep in the minivan. A minivan could comfortably accommodate 6, 7, or 8, or even more passengers.

Pickup trucks are generally used for commercial transportation. And they have a powerful engine, so sometimes you might even see them in off-roading ventures.

Super Car

Super cars are designed for 2 passengers. 

A couple of examples are Buggati Chiron, Ferrari, etc.

Limousines, as called as Limo as a luxurious car model that are especially designed.  The floor area of the car is increased to accommodate multiple passengers. There are limousines based on different car shapes we are discussing in this blog. For instance, there is a sedan based limousine, SUV based Limousine and there is classic vintage limousine. The number of passenger seat in a limousine completely depends of the manufacturer of the car.

Monster Trucks

Most monster trucks have the capacity to hold 2 passengers, but the new design includes seating for four passengers as well. Riding a monster truck is an adventure in itself. Jeep (Jeep type)

American brand Jeep is dedicated to manufacturing world-class Jeeps and other car brands follow the design as well. Jeep is well suited for off-road terrains and they also rock it on good flat highways.

Roadster cars are the combination of the sports cars, convertible and coupe cars. Roadster cars have two doors and open roof with a sporty look.

Roadster cars are manufactured for high performance and speed. They have seating for 2. Some roadster cars have folding roofs made of fabric or metal materials. These cars are also referred to as spider or spyder cars.
