The Jeep brand was officially started in 1941. At first, they only made vehicles for the military. Jeeps were the first mass-produced cars with four doors. This was the start of the SUV era. In the 1940s, when it became clear that the U.S. would join the war in Europe, the U.S. Army contacted many car companies and asked them to build a prototype. Karl Probst, a designer in Detroit for the American Bantam Car Company, heard the call. Willys and Ford eventually took over making the Bantam Reconnaissance Car, and both companies later made Jeeps for the Army.
Some people aren’t sure where the name “Jeep” came from, but the main theory is that it came from slurring the word “GP” into “Jeep.” GP meant Government Purposes or General Purposes. Joe Frazer, who used to be the head of Willys-Overland, said that the story was true, and that’s how the Jeep got its name.
After the war, Jeep decided to build on its newfound popularity by making a lot of new designs. In the 1950s, Jeep started to look into more ways to use its cars for recreation. It came out with seven new models, including the M-170, CJ-5, and FC-170. The CJ-5 was the Jeep that was made for the longest time, from 1954 to 1984.
Henry J. Kaiser bought Jeep for $60 million in 1953. Kaiser was a big part of the beginning of the 4WD and its future. Under Kaiser, Jeeps were made in 30 different countries and sold in more than 150 other countries around the world.
In the 1960s, the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee we know today were made. In 1963, Jeep came out with the J-Series Wagoneer, bigger than a station wagon and still called an “SUV.”
American Motors Corporation bought Kaiser Jeep in 1970, and the first thing they did was separate military production from civilian recreation production. During this time, Jeep also made three different engine choices available. In 1976, when Jeep was 35 years old, they released the CJ-7, which later became the famous “Wrangler.”
In 1987, right after the Jeep Wrangler came out, Chrysler Corporation bought American Motors Corporation. What AMC had built was changed by the new leaders, who made the Wrangler and Cherokee famous.
The Wrangler was named “4×4 of the Year” by Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road, and the Cherokee was called “Four Wheeler of the Year” by Four Wheeler Magazine in 1997.
